Mission statement

The main focus of the VIB Department of Molecular Genetics is on human molecular genetics of complex neurodegenerative diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system.

Key goals:

1. to intensify and extend the biosampling using standardized protocols, biobanking of diverse types of biosamples and data banking of phenotypic information of well characterized patients with neurodegenerative diseases and control individuals

2. to identify genes and genetic risk factors using targeted next generation sequencing technologies in familial patients and patient/control cohorts

3. to design cell biology assays and model organisms to increase our understanding of the biological function of genetic variants and genes associated with disease

4. to develop means to translate basic research findings to clinical practice
