About

The DSF is located at the University of Antwerp, campus Drie Eiken. A team of dedicated people is working at the DSF and has all necessary technologies available in order to perform all tests with high accuracy. For this we make use of the services of the Neuromics Support Facility (NSF) and work closely together with the NBD research group of the Center for Molecular Neurology of the VIB (Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie).

The Diagnostic Service Facility (DSF) is specialized in molecular genetic testing of rare hereditary disorders of the central nervous system. We offer genetic testing of neurodegenerative brain diseases, upon request of specialized referrers such as neurologists and genetic couselors.

We offer genetic testing for Alzheimer disease (AD), Parkinson disease (PD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A complete overview of all tests offered can be found here.

Our genetic tests comprise the analysis of coding regions of genes associated with specific diseases. Sequence analysis of coding exons and exon/intron boundaries is performed in search for possible pathogenic mutations. For some of the genes we offer dosage analysis, by which CNVs can be detected by MAQ or MLPA.

Request Forms

Please find in the following the links concerning the request forms for both Belgian and non Belgian patients.

Sample Instructions

Please mention name and date of birth or a unique identification number of the patient on each tube.
The data on the tubes have to be in accordance with patient data on the request form.

Blood samples

  • Per patient 2 x 10 ml blood on Lithium Heparin is required (for newborns, smaller volumes will be accepted)
  • Store at room temperature or at 4 °C, do NOT freeze
  • Blood samples can be sent by regular mail, but should reach our lab within 48 hours (Friday before 2PM)
  • Blood samples spotted on Whatman FTA cards are also accepted. FTA Blood Collection kits can be ordered here
  • An additional fee will be charged for DNA extraction from blood samples and FTA blood spots (see our prices and billing info)

DNA samples

  • High quality DNA samples are also accepted (with a minimum concentration of 25µg and A260/280 ratio of 1.8 - 2.0)

Packaging instructions

Blood samples shall be packed according to international ADR packaging instructions (P650):

  • Samples have to be protected from breakage and leakage
  • The samples are placed in a protective secondary package
  • The secondary package is secured with cushioning material and placed in an outer packaging (strong enough to whitstand pressure)
  • On the outer package, the UN3773 mark and the shipping name "BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE, CATEGORY B" are displayed

Pricing & Billing Info

An overview of prices for genetic testing can be found here.

An invoice for payment will be send upon receipt of the samples and completed request form. The exact billing address has to be provided on the request form.

We require pre-payment of a genetic test, so payment has to be received before a test result is communicated to the referring physician (in order to speed up the billing process, the invoice can be send to the referring physician by e-mail).

Payments can only be accepted by bank transfer in Euro. Checks and extra bank charges on our account cannot be accepted.
